Aplix and TAT Form Strategic Partnership to Bring a More Compelling User Experience to Mobile Phones

17 June 2005

Aplix Corporation (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Ryu Koriyama) announced today a strategic partnership with TAT AB (Headquarters: Malmö; CEO: Ludvig Linge) to create a new breed of mobile phone user interfaces and experiences in an effort to maximize the value of Java technology for the wireless industry.

Aplix's JBlend™, an industry-leading Java™ platform, and TAT's Kastor, a popular and powerful graphics engine, will create a combined platform that will finally realize the full potential of Java on mobile phones. It is intended that this resulting collaboration will enable handset manufacturers and wireless operators the ability to change the user experience via themes that can be downloaded to the mobile phones. These themes would alter the look-and-feel of the mobile phone, allowing for more customization by wireless operators, handset manufacturer, or even the end user.

"Operators have been requesting specific look-and-feel customizations for the mobile phones on their networks for years," said Wesley Kuo, President and CSO of Aplix. "This collaboration will enable these customizations to be done quickly and easily, dramatically reducing the time to market for new products. In addition, providing the ability to create new services that generate increased revenue while leveraging their existing investments in Java."

"The partnership is about more than just the integration of JBlend and Kastor. The companies also plan to launch new products and services based on projects that are currently under co-development," said Ludvig Linge, CEO of TAT. "There is a lot of information that people want access to on their phones, but in the current generation of mobile phones it is difficult, if not impossible to use. Aplix and TAT are planning to change this paradigm and give the market a solution that enables mobile phones a more compelling user experience."

The two companies have already started development projects and it is anticipated that prototype versions will be available around the end of Q2 2005.
