Brightstar Corp. Announces MIT Media Lab Sponsorship20 January 2005
Brightstar Corp., a leading logistics and supply chain management company for the wireless industry, announced its sponsorship of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab to explore and invent new telecommunications-related technologies through multiple research programs. Under the terms of the agreement, Brightstar will sponsor and fund ongoing research programs at the Media Lab developed to support the advancement of technology as part of the Lab's Digital Life consortium. The sponsorship began on January 1, 2005. Marcelo Claure, Brightstar CEO, said about the sponsorship, "The MIT Media Lab's reputation as a world class research facility is truly unparalleled. We are honored to participate in the cutting edge research and discovery of MIT faculty and students and believe that together, we can identify technologies that will have an enormous impact on our industry and our world." According to Claure, Brightstar and the Media Lab will work collaboratively to develop research programs in such potential areas as wireless devices, wearable devices, new radio technologies, wireless data, new user interfaces, wireless applications, logistics, operations and supply chain management. "Brightstar is a company that combines the flexibility of a start-up with the momentum of a Fortune 100, working in the 'white spaces' of the telecommunications industry," said Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder and chairman of MIT Media Laboratory, and Wiesner Professor of Media Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Negroponte continued, "Classic models of telephony and handsets will soon be replaced by cognitive and peer-to-peer devices -- changes of the kind that might be overlooked by traditional hardware and distribution companies. The Media Lab will work with Brightstar to help ensure that they stay at the forefront of these trends." Brightstar employees and management are encouraged to participate in the MIT Media Lab research by providing input into research topics, participating in research committees and offering input based on real-world experience within the telecom business. Claure added, "As an organization, Brightstar has always been focused on identifying new and better ways to serve our customers. We believe this partnership with the MIT Media Lab is a natural extension of our vision and mission and we are eager to move forward."
