Colubris Wins Boston and D.C. Municipal Wi-Fi Deals

Colubris Networks, a pioneer of intelligent, multiservice WLAN systems, is helping to bring free Wi-Fi to the City of Boston via partnerships with two other locally based leaders in wireless technology -- Single Digits, Inc. and Ascio Wireless.

The first two Boston-based Wi-Fi deployments offer free Internet access to residents and businesses located in the West Roxbury and Roslindale sections of the city and were switched on today to coincide with the Boston Wi-Fi Summit being held at the Boston Museum of Science. The Summit is addressing recent analysis of wireless technology in the city and business models to increase Wi-Fi capabilities in the future. The Summit is sponsored by the City of Boston, local politicians, government organizations, businesses and wireless user groups.

"Boston joins the rapidly growing, global list of cities and towns -- Philadelphia to San Francisco and Nantucket to Rancho Rio -- offering access to free or discounted wireless "hot spots" for logging onto the Internet. Municipalities are increasingly looking at Wi-Fi service as another necessary utility for residents and businesses," said Michael Welts, vice president, Marketing, Colubris Networks.

Colubris Networks is providing the wireless hardware and software that serves as the foundation for Boston's new municipal Wi-Fi service. Single Digits is providing the wireless management and hosting solution. Ascio Wireless installed the hardware and software.

Washington, D.C. Open Park Project

For the past year, Colubris equipment has delivered metro area Wi-Fi services in Washington, D.C., near the White House and Congress. Earlier this year, the Open Park Project and Colubris offered for the first time free Wi-Fi access along the presidential inauguration route and at the inauguration itself. Open Park is a Washington, D.C. non-profit organization founded to bring wireless Internet access to the public on the National Mall.
