Comtrend Announces a Multimode DSL Wireless Router That Supports VDSL2 and ADSL2+ in a Single Unit

16 March 2006

Comtrend Corporation, a leading manufacturer of DSL customer premises equipment (CPE), today announced the immediate availability of its Multimode DSL wireless router. The Comtrend CT-5371 supports all existing ADSL standards as well as the ITU-T VDSL2 standard (G.993.2). This new product offers the widest flexibility to provide service providers with a Multimode DSL solution that enables legacy data and new triple-play services which can be installed now in ADSL networks and automatically connect to VDSL2 as it is deployed in the network.

The CT-5371 includes four 10/100 Base-T Ethernet ports and a single USB port to provide wired LAN connectivity along with an integrated 802.11n WiFi WLAN Access Point (AP) for wireless connectivity. The DSL interfaces are provided through the use of a scalable DSL transceiver from Broadcom(R) Corporation, which offers the flexibility to meet all required and optional advancements in support of the new VDSL2 standard, including both ATM and Ethernet transport, dual latency and dual interleaving, flexible transmit power, full control over spectral usage, and performance optimizing framing, filtering and provides rates of up to 100 Mbps.

The CT-5371 is capable of handling IP video with true traffic management with the use of traffic specific Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs). Subscribers can watch television programming while simultaneously sharing a data network for e-mail, audio downloads and voice on a single device. The use of Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping and IGMP proxy provides for proper traffic control of IP multicast packets.

"With Broadcom's support we have executed on our vision of providing customers with an upgradeable and scalable product that works across the various DSL technologies being deployed in the network," commented Comtrend General Manager Andrew Morton. "We have successfully completed a full battery of compatibility and interoperability tests with key DSLAM suppliers to assure full performance and ease of installation and provisioning."

"True multi-ADSL2+/VDSL2 silicon solutions for CPE enable carriers to upgrade their equipment once and then focus on providing advanced triple-play services over the technology of their choice," said Greg Fischer, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's carrier access business unit. "Our ADSL/VDSL2 multimode solution, which features data rate scalability over loop length with xDSL flexibility, offers clear differentiation and true standards-based interoperability to our customers and service providers."
