D-Link adds 802.3af Power over Ethernet Solution to Switches

26 January 2005

D-Link, the leading global manufacturer of broadband, wireless and networking solutions to the SOHO, SMB and Enterprise environments is now adding an 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) solution to its wide range of switches. The DES-1316K is a 16-port 10/100Mbps switch with 8 combined 10/100Mbps TP/PoE ports and 8 pure 10/100Mbps TP ports, plus two DWL-P50 PoE adapters that are supplied as standard and at no extra charge.

The DES-1316K is an extremely flexible and cost-effective package which can be used for a number of different solutions, such as supplying power to wireless access points or IP-based surveillance cameras without having to connect the AP or camera to an external power source via a wall socket.

The DES-1316K combines conventional 10/100Mbps Ethernet switching with 802.3af standard power supply on Ethernet cabling of up to 100 metres. The switch is equipped with a user-friendly web interface and eight of the 16 ports have PoE support. The ability to supply power via conventional network cables makes the DES-1316K a central power source for IP phones and surveillance cameras, as well as wireless access points. This solution also avoids the need for these types of units to have their own separate power supply.

The DWL-P50, the Power Over Ethernet adapter supplied with the DES-1316K, distributes 5V or 12V DC current to units without PoE support, and works with LAN switches and other units that have ports which support PoE power supply. The user connects the DWL-P50 to the access point, camera or IP phone, and these units can then be positioned in locations where there is no conventional power outlet.

"The DES-1316K is a very practical solution for use wherever a power supply is required, for example wireless access points or IP-based surveillance cameras, and where there is no fixed installation for the supply of power. Schools, hospitals, hotels, airports and various types of hotspot solutions can all benefit from this type of installation," says Tahira Perveen, Country Sales Manager, D-Link UK & Ireland. "The DES-1316K fits neatly into our range and demonstrates even more clearly our aim of offering cost-effective solutions for small and medium-sized businesses".

The DES-1316K in brief:
• Switch with 16 10/100Base-TX ports (8 PoE ports and 8 pure 10/100Mbps ports)
• 2 DWL-P50 PoE adapters
• Compliant with 802.3af PoE standard
• The PoE ports work with all 802.3af-enabled units. For non 802.3af-enabled units, the DWL-P50 PoE adapter is required
• Automatic MDI/MDIX cross over for all ports
• 802.1p prioritised queues, port-based QoS
• Simple configuration using web-based administration

DWL-P50:
• Supplies DC current via Cat 5 cable to wireless LAN units
• Protects wireless LAN units from sudden power surges
• Supplies 5 V and 12 V DC current (sliding switch enables correct voltage to be selected)
• Plug-and–play installation
• Operating system independent

The DES-1316K should be available by mid-February at a recommended retail price of £264 excluding VAT.

The DWL-P50 can be bought separately and has a recommended retail price of £20.00 excluding VAT.
