Daughters of Charity Health System Improving Care With Symbol Enterprise Mobility Solutions

15 December 2005

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), today announced that Daughters of Charity Health System, a regional health care system of hospitals and medical centers, has selected Symbol's wireless network infrastructure and mobile computers to improve operations at its five California hospitals. The Symbol mobility solution will be a part of an overall strategy aimed at patient safety and increasing the mobility of patient data.

The Symbol WS5100 Wireless Switches and AP300 Access Ports will create the foundation for a secure wireless network infrastructure at the Daughters of Charity affiliate hospitals.
At Daughters of Charity Health System's Seton Medical Center, located in Daly City, California, phlebotomists already collect patient blood samples and data in real-time and immediately print tube labels at the bedside using Symbol's PPT8800 mobile computer installed with the Misys Collection Manager application. This approach helps significantly reduce entry error and increase the accuracy of patient information shared within the hospital.
"Daughters of Charity Health System consists of clinically-focused hospitals with no room for down time," said Michael Day, clinical systems strategy director at Daughters of Charity Health System. "We decided that a wireless network could help make changes in our organization. Having Symbol's wireless network for mobility gives us an opportunity to look at our business and improve our operations to better service our patients."
A newly admitted patient in the Emergency Department is initially visited once to accurately collect all demographic information using a mobile computer, compared with the old process of multiple visits to collect and enter patient information into the hospital's records system using a more manual process. With the successful bedside sample collection pilot, the Daughters of Charity Health System is evaluating other Symbol handheld devices for other bedside patient interactions, including bedside medication administration and verification.
"Symbol's rugged and sealed PPT8800 mobile computer with power management meets the demands of healthcare customers such as Daughters of Charity Health System, seeking an end-to-end mobility solution," said Ken Kleinberg, senior director of Symbol's healthcare solutions division. "The combination of Symbol's mobile computers and secure, high-performance wireless network infrastructure is well suited for any healthcare institution aiming to increase staff productivity and provide enhanced and safe patient care."
The Daughters of Charity Health System decided its staff would use Symbol mobile computers in areas where patient rooms have limited space for equipment, and to take advantage of the latest clinically-based healthcare software applications. Symbol's wireless network infrastructure products were selected for their security, performance, scalability and manageability.
"Initially, we completed small wireless implementations with another vendor, and then revisited our plan for a system-wide wireless network as the wireless network infrastructure would be an integral component of any future enterprise applications," added Day. "We were impressed with the pre-emptive roaming and better signal strength of the Symbol wireless network and pleased that it was easier to manage and less expensive."
