Dell Israel and Code Red Systems Collaborate on Wi-Fi Security

20 May 2005

Wi-Fi Technology Forum/- Dell Israel announced a collaboration with Code Red Systems, a Jerusalem-based software developer specializing in the management and security of 802.11 wireless networks. The alliance will allow Dell Israel to offer AirStop™, Code Red’s protection against “wireless bridging” in enterprises deploying a large number of wireless equipped laptop computers.

Dell Israel offers a broad selection of laptop computers with built-in wireless communications. AirStopTM allows Dell to provide its customers with complete protection against wireless bridging attacks via its mobile computers.

Even in companies implementing a “no wireless” policy, each authorized mobile computer can potentially become a wireless bridge for attackers seeking unauthorized access to the network. These types of attacks are actually enabled by the user-friendliness of the operating system which automatically connects to the strongest available wireless LAN in the immediate vicinity. In light of this connectivity, every computer with a simultaneous wired (LAN) and wireless (WLAN) connection can act as a bridge for external attackers trying to break into the corporate network.

“We must provide a full solution for our customers”, said Shlomi Kortler, Marketing Manager for Dell Israel. “Therefore, it is important to include advanced wireless security solutions along with our mobile offerings. From now on, any organization purchasing a Dell laptop can also be provided with protection against wireless attacks.”

Drew Tick, CEO of Code Red Systems adds, “The definition for the AirStopTM product came from the market, requiring a cost-effective simple solution which is easy to install and maintain. The strategic relationship allows Dell Israel to concentrate on the marketing while Code Red continues to focus on bringing cost-effective technological solutions to the marketplace.”

AirStopTM is based on patent-pending technology and features defined by actual customers. Due to the overwhelming demand for this product, it is clear that IT managers and data security experts are looking for solutions which limit the wireless connectivity of laptops when connected to an organization’s wired network.

The software prevents bridging attacks by enforcing security policy which allows for a single communications adapter to be used for connecting to the network at a given time. Once the software detects a wired connection, it automatically disables the wireless card. Additional features of the software include centralized installation, remote configuration, and prioritization of communications adapters. Additional versions of the software are also available which control access with other communications devices, such as Fax / Modems, Firewire, Bluetooth, GPRS and Flash Disk Storage Devices.
