eircom provides free WiFi in Dublin CC10 December 2004
Fixed line operator, eircom, today said it is now providing free wireless broadband (WiFi) through its phone boxes in Dublin City Centre.
It said that a selection of eircom payphones throughout the city, are now transmitting wireless broadband access within a range of approximately 50 meters. In addition, hotspots in Rathmines, Blackrock and Dun Laoighaire have also been activated. By Christmas, eircom will enable 50 payphones providing free wireless broadband access to the public.
In 2005, eircom will roll out similar services in Cork, Limerick and Galway, bringing the benefits of extremely fast, always on Internet access to users.
Commenting about the initiative, John Quist, Product Portfolio Director, said eircom continues to lead the way and stimulate broadband usage throughout Ireland.
"By taking advantage of our existing infrastructure, eircom is offering the public an opportunity to try this exciting technology for free in public places when sitting at an outdoor cafe or walking down the street. This is the latest step in eircom's strategy to increase broadband usage. We already have the widest network of wireless hotspots in Ireland, located in hotels, restaurants and airports," he said.
