EMCORE Announces 20 Gbps DDR SmartLink(TM) Optical Media Converter6 March 2006
EMCORE Corporation (Nasdaq: EMKR), a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and wireless communications markets, today announced that it has begun sampling its new QTR 3500 SmartLink(TM) Double Data Rate (DDR) Optical Media Converter (OMC). This product marks the next generation of copper-to-fiber media converters with 20 Gbps bandwidth and 150m extended reach capability for InfiniBand, Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel applications. The QTR 3500 allows IT managers the most cost effective solution to extend their data link distances from the standard 15m over 4x copper cable to 150m using industry standard MTP/MPO optical cable. The SmartLink(TM) electrical interface mates directly into industry standard MDI electrical sockets used in 4x DDR Infiniband and CX4 applications. The SmartLink(TM) is field upgradeable and provides a unique pay as you go solution. The scalable 20 Gbps net bandwidth is transmitted with four full-duplex transmit and receive channels that are transparent to the user. In addition, the 1 Watt power dissipation of the media converter provides the smallest and most power efficient electrical to optical solution available. "The QTR 3500 is designed to be the highest bandwidth solution for extending link distances in the growing InfiniBand market. In addition, it is an extremely versatile product that is ideal for a wide variety of applications, including enterprise data centers, high performance computing, telecom central offices, defense and high-end test equipment," said Robert Bryan, Vice President and General Manager of EMCORE Fiber Optics division. "The QTR 3500 offers an attractive combination of high performance and low cost in an innovative form factor for either extending bandwith in-system or interconnecting between systems." Dr. Bryan added, "EMCORE is the market leader in Optical Media Converter technology and has seen steadily increased demand as InfiniBand and other applications require increased bandwidth at an affordable cost." Recently, EMCORE's SmartLink(TM) modules were showcased at the 2005 Supercomputing Conference as part of the largest, cross-continental InfiniBand data center. Over 6 Teraflops of supercomputer performance was locally interconnected using the SmartLink(TM) modules in a network that featured leading InfiniBand component vendors, infrastructure equipment suppliers, software vendors, and research end-users. EMCORE's QTR 3500 will be on display at the OFC/NFOEC conference in Anaheim, CA on March 6-8, 2006. For more information on these products and EMCORE, please visit http://www.emcore.com.
