Fujitsu Sets New Standard for Usability and Equipment Management8 March 2005
Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and wireline/wireless networking solutions, today announced the latest release of its NETSMART® 1500 Element Management System (EMS) software. Significant new features, which include topology auto-discovery and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) connection management, dramatically lower operating costs and strengthen the prowess of the industry's most powerful EMS.
This new release of NETSMART 1500 software provides the capability to search across a carrier's infrastructure and automatically discover and inventory all network nodes and associated optical inter-connections. This time-saving feature significantly reduces operating costs for carriers and allows new network elements to begin earning revenue quickly. Service providers who install the NETSMART 1500 EMS for the first time can use auto-discovery features to inventory their entire network without having to find and input network element details from paper records, dramatically reducing start-up time and errors.
Connection management capabilities, introduced in the previous release of NETSMART 1500 software, have been significantly upgraded to include support for WDM connections. Advanced algorithms built into the NETSMART 1500 EMS identify unused network bandwidth, determine optimal circuit paths based on user preferences, allow users to preview proposed routes and adjust path and circuit parameters, and provision SONET and WDM connections quickly.
New remote user notification options allow the NETSMART 1500 EMS to contact key service personnel via e-mail, phone or pager when a network alarm or housekeeping event occurs. Contacts and notification methods can be customized to specific alarm severity levels, alarm types and time of day as appropriate for the required response. Fan filter replacement reminders can also be set to notify personnel when a fan filter on a network element should be replaced. By tracking maintenance schedules of connected network elements, the NETSMART 1500 EMS helps keep equipment running in optimal condition to lengthen their lives.

A new Performance Monitoring (PM) export wizard allows PM data from a user-configurable timeframe to be easily extracted from the system. By organizing data into individual files, operators can use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to export PM data to other Operational Support Systems (OSSs). The Product Change Notice (PCN) correlation wizard has been enhanced to simplify and streamline updates to the PCN database within the NETSMART 1500 EMS. These new capabilities improve the implementation time for necessary hardware changes throughout the network, thus improving network reliability and service velocity.
"The significant usability enhancements we've included in this latest release of our NETSMART 1500 EMS are the direct result of productivity testing and direct feedback from our carrier customers," said Steve Pelosi, vice president of network operations planning. "Sophisticated wizards allow users of all skill levels to easily perform formerly time-consuming tasks. Plus, advanced algorithms simplify network provisioning and maintenance, allowing significant operating cost reductions."
The NETSMART 1500 EMS allows carriers to manage, provision and maintain up to 8,000 SONET, SDH and WDM network elements, as well as the circuits that run through them, from a single server. This fully integrated solution includes a comprehensive suite of element management features for quick and efficient turn-up of voice, video, data and storage services. The NETSMART 1500 software provides unparalleled scalability to support network provisioning, maintenance and surveillance. Carriers that deploy the NETSMART 1500 EMS realize operational expenditure savings, while enjoying powerful security and network survivability features. The software runs on SPARC® compliant Solaris™ compatible servers, including the Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER® 650 platform.
The NETSMART 1500 EMS allows carriers to fully exploit the industry-leading capabilities of Fujitsu platforms that were recently named #1 in their respective market segments by RHK, a leading independent telecom research and advisory service firm. In January 2005, RHK named Fujitsu the leading supplier of SONET aggregation equipment to North American carriers based on the broad acceptance of their FLASHWAVE® 4000 Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs) by several RBOCs and dozens of major independent wireline and wireless carriers. RHK also named Fujitsu the dominant supplier of Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) in March 2005 with over 75% global market share and 83% market share in North America. This latest achievement is the result of widespread use of their FLASHWAVE 7500 platform by Multiple System Operators (MSO) to support their converged networks and aggressive rollout of Video on Demand (VOD) services.
