Houston-Galveston Area Council Awards Nextel Communications Contract to Provide Wireless Products, Services

Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:NXTL), the leading provider of digital wireless communications, today announced it has been selected by the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) to provide a wide range of wireless solutions to the program's participating members, which include more than 1,500 local governments, state agencies and qualifying non-profit corporations from across the United States.

The agreement will allow all participating state, local and nonprofit agencies to order directly from Nextel through www.HGACBuy.com, and will provide special rates for service plans, phones and phone accessories. Program participants also will benefit from expedited procurement, volume purchasing and dedicated contract and technical assistance.

"Public safety and government agencies throughout the country already use Nextel and benefit from its versatile and highly secure wireless communications offerings, including Direct Connect(R) digital walkie-talkie service," said Michael Orchard, Nextel's area vice president for Texas and Louisiana. "And through the H-GAC program, procurement and contracting of Nextel's complete suite of products and services will be simplified and expedited."

Nextel phones incorporate features that add functionality and value, including Wireless Priority Service - which provides authorized public and private sector leaders and decision makers with priority wireless service during times of emergency. Wireless Priority Service is available for Direct Connect users through Priority Connect(SM) service, as well as for digital cellular, text messaging and Wireless Web access.
