Impeva Labs Announces Products to Provide Continuous Reporting of Location, Condition and Security for Globally Deployed Intermodal Shipping Container1 November 2005
Impeva Labs, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View with engineering in Silicon Valley, Panama City, Florida, and international locations, announced the availability of its Global Sentinel(TM) wireless reporting module and Device Management Center (DMC) that provide immediate global monitoring of intermodal shipping container security, condition and location.
The container-mounted Global Sentinel module incorporates various types of electronic sensors and communicates seamlessly worldwide with Impeva's DMC through multiple wireless technologies, providing immediate secure access to data from the container. The DMC links to Impeva customers' data centers in a number of ways including standard XML over a secure network connection. Customers and the appropriate agencies can also be notified via SMS text messaging and email notification within minutes of a container experiencing an abnormal event. The Impeva systems provide the entire supply chain with improved security, reduced shrinkage and, thus, lower insurance premiums.
By providing a virtual "Continuous Chain of Custody," Global Sentinel facilitates the implementation of fast-lane Customs processing and the time-critical knowledge to enhance logistics management. "In today's global shipping environment, meeting the requirements for both container security and efficient logistics is extremely challenging," said Tony Moroyan, Chairman and CEO of Impeva. "With continuous tracking, monitoring, and security capabilities made possible by ubiquitous global communication, we have designed our products to be a net value-add for global shippers as opposed to a security tax. We have already succeeded in rigorous commercial and government trials -- experience that brings us into the market with a proven solution." Shippers and Agencies Benefit from Global Tracking and Condition Reporting More stringent security requirements threaten to impose severe bottlenecks in the supply chain, due to the need to ensure that the container has not been breached.
Unlike systems that are limited to physical inspection or close-proximity interrogation, the Impeva system can reliably detect and immediately report integrity breaches from anywhere in the world. This capability represents the first true Continuous Chain of Custody (C-3) Shipping System(TM). Now shippers, logistics companies, port managers and government agencies can deploy an effective "fast-lane" system to avoid inspection delays for known-secure containers. The "Whatever, Wherever, Whenever, You'll Know" (TM) capability of Global Sentinel enables close coordination of intermodal transitions and delivery, and provides the missing link for the renewal of deterministic supply chains. In addition, with immediate reporting of container intrusions or route diversions, shrinkage can be curtailed, accountability assured, and insurance costs lowered. By continuously monitoring internal container conditions such as temperature, moisture, and G-forces, unacceptable cargo handling can be immediately reported and, if necessary, logistics managers can initiate a replacement shipment even before the original shipment reaches its destination.
Impeva's Products Are Robust and Highly Flexible Impeva's Global Sentinel is a ruggedized module that installs securely and easily inside the top edge of the container door. The low-profile antenna enclosure extends outside above the door. This flexible device can incorporate multiple types of internal, tethered and wireless sensors including seal integrity, light, motion, acoustic, vibration, G-forces, CO2, explosives and radiation. Onboard sensor algorithms, business rules, geozone definitions and event analysis software provide autonomous decision-making for situation assessment and reporting. Container tracking is done by worldwide GPS. Advanced power management allows two to five years of stand-alone operation from field-replaceable internal batteries. Encrypted wireless communication capability is provided through global satellite, multi-band cellular, and a variety of local means including Bluetooth, 802.11, and RFID. Regardless of the communications network used, the Impeva DMC maintains communication with each deployed Global Sentinel module and provides a secure data conduit for customers, third-party Network Operations Centers and appropriate government agencies on a strict "need to know" basis. Rigorous Program Proves Performance Validation of the Impeva system by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is part of a security contract announced today by Impeva, which is part of Operation Safe Commerce (OSC), a U.S. Department of Homeland Security program trialing technology and commercial practices to make container shipping safer.
PANYNJ is concentrating on testing internal sensor technology that tracks and reports a container's global location and detects if someone breaks into the box in transit. PANYNJ will work with two companies in Germany and Jordan that will use Impeva's Global Sentinel security module on their container shipments. The port hopes to use the Impeva system to evaluate at least 1,000 container loads over the next year. The OSC is now in Phase III of its testing program and is focused on the most promising solutions and development of international container security standards. All systems offered for Phase III have endured rigorous testing by Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. Phase III is intended to result in information that policy-makers can use, as well as return-on-investment for shippers.
