International University Chooses NextG Networks for Wireless Network19 January 2005
Florida International University (FIU) will use NextG Networks to provide wireless coverage to their 34,000 students over 550 acres on two major campuses, University Park in western Miami-Dade County and the Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami. “We chose NextG Networks to provide improved cellular coverage and capacity for our students and faculty because we didn’t want to compromise University Park’s distinctive architecture or the natural environment of the Biscayne Bay Campus.” said Jorge Estay, FIU’s University Technology Services Coordinator.
The NextG Network will deploy small, unobtrusive, microcells in a distributed antennae system instead of large cell towers. Using NextG Networks’ patented fiber optic technology, these low power microcells connect to the existing campus fiber network. Says Peter Georges, Director of Business Development for NextG Networks “This is a win-win situation - where NextG Networks is providing a carrier-class wireless network to FIU on top of their existing under utilized fiber network.”
The new network, designed, built, and managed by NextG Networks, will be a protocol agnostic network that scales easily and can support a range of wireless technologies and frequencies – including GSM, GPRS, CDMA, Wi-Fi and public safety network protocols. The NextG Networks infrastructure will be made available to any wireless carrier who wants to improve their services, coverage, or capacity to the students and faculty of FIU.
