Interpeak Bolsters Wireless Offering with 802.1x Supplicant

10 March 2005

Interpeak, a pioneer of networking and security protocol solutions for embedded systems, announced today at the Embedded Systems Conference that its wireless security solution, the Interpeak 802.1x Supplicant, will be available during the second quarter of 2005. Embedded devices with Internet connectivity will rely on the Interpeak 802.1x Supplicant to initiate the authentication process when seeking access to a wireless local area network (WLAN).

Background
WLANs are becoming the preferred method for wireless network connectivity. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and its 802.11 working group have addressed the security issues inherent to WLANs. The 802.11 standard has over 15 amendments, the latest of which is 802.11i (June 2004). This amendment includes an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for data encryption and 802.1x for user authentication, both of which address earlier security weaknesses. Under this authentication system, user authentication is performed using the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP).

Interpeak 802.1x Supplicant
The Interpeak 802.1x Supplicant enables an embedded wireless station (or supplicant, in 802.1x terminology) to initiate the EAP authentication with an Access Point (or authenticator) and authentication server. The Interpeak 802.1x Supplicant supports a range of EAP mechanisms, including EAP-PEAP, -TLS, and -MD5. Tests with commercial 802.1x authenticators have demonstrated successful communication and authentication under a number of scenarios. Interpeak plans to release its 802.1x Supplicant during Q2 of 2005.

'The Interpeak 802.1x Supplicant allows our customers to adhere to the 802.1x standard and benefit from a high level of wireless security,' said Roger Boden, chief technology officer at Interpeak. 'It strengthens our best-in-class IPv4/IPv6 TCP/IP stacks, which enable embedded products to seamlessly incorporate wireless connectivity into their products.'

As with all Interpeak products, the Interpeak 802.1x Supplicant runs on all major real-time operating systems (RTOSs), including Linux, INTEGRITY, OSE, VxWorks, Nucleus, and ITRON. For more information about Interpeak's products, please visit www.interpeak.com.
