16 February 2005

Chi Mei Communications Systems, Inc. (CMCS), a leading Taiwanese handset manufacturer, and Kineto Wireless, the key innovator and leading supplier of UMA Technology (Unlicensed Mobile Access), announced today that CMCS is working with Kineto Wireless to develop UMA-enabled GSM/GPRS/EDGE-WiFi handsets. The collaboration is the result of growing demand for UMA Technology, the standard for fixed-mobile convergence, from fixed-line and mobile service providers worldwide.

"We are pleased to be working with Kineto Wireless, the leading supplier of UMA Technology, to deliver a solution for fixed-mobile convergence," said Calvin Chih, President of CMCS. "We foresee substantial demand for UMA Technology from operators and working with Kineto Wireless will enable us to offer our OEM customers the best UMA solutions to meet that demand."

CMCS is using the Kineto UMA Client Software ported for the Microsoft Windows Mobile-based Smart Phone Edition available from Kineto Wireless. Kineto provides a full suite of device developer solutions designed to accelerate the delivery of UMA-compliant products to market.

"Kineto is pleased to be collaborating with CMCS on the development of UMA-enabled mobile phones," said Mark Powell, Vice President and Founder of Kineto. "CMCS is a top supplier of leading edge mobile handsets to OEMs around the world and their UMA handset is sure to be among one of the best."

The UMA-enabled handsets will be shown in Kineto's booth at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, February 14 -- 18, 2005.

About UMA Technology

Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology is the standard for fixed-mobile convergence (FMC). UMA technology enables access to mobile voice, data and IMS services over IP broadband access and unlicensed spectrum technologies. By deploying UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. With UMA, subscribers receive a consistent user experience for their mobile voice, data and IMS services as they transition between networks.

The UMA specifications were created by Alcatel, AT&T Wireless, British Telecom, Cingular, Ericsson, Kineto Wireless, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel, O2, Research in Motion, Rogers Wireless, Siemens, Sony-Ericsson and T-Mobile US. The specifications are available for download at www.umatechnology.org. The UMA technology specification, known as TS 43.318 in the 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) standards body, was recently approved for inclusion into the upcoming 3GPP Release 6.
