Meru Powers Nation's Largest Metro Voice and Data Wi-Fi Service28 January 2005
Meru Networks, the global leader in converged voice and data WLANs, announced today that its WLAN System is powering the largest citywide converged voice and data network in the United States. Working with system integrator Azulstar Networks, a division of Ottawa Wireless, the city of Rio Rancho, NM has gone live with citywide Wi-Fi data service built on Meru's WLAN solutions. Azulstar and the city are also in final testing of wireless VoIP phone services running over the same infrastructure, and expects to launch this within the next 90 days. Often referred to as the Silicon Mesa, forward-thinking Rio Rancho, NM is home to 64,000 residents and a large number of high tech companies. "This is the nation's largest and most advanced citywide Wi-Fi network," said Tyler van Houwelingen, Azulstar CEO. "We chose Meru equipment for this deployment not only for its ability to scale to support an entire city's worth of Wi-Fi traffic, but also because of Meru's unique ability to provide guaranteed quality of service in large wireless VoIP deployments. These capabilities have enabled us to go live with data services today and to plan for the upcoming VoWi-Fi telephone service without upgrading the network." The unique advantages Meru's WLAN system provides Azulstar's solution include:
-- Zero Handoff: Recent independent tests of Wi-Fi products have shown that other WLAN systems can cause delays of 500ms to 1 second rendering VoIP service impossible. The Meru Controller and Meru AP's form a coordinated WLAN system that eliminates handoff delays. -- Over-the-air QoS: Meru's over-the-air Quality of Service (QoS) for both downstream and upstream traffic ensures high quality voice and data service to all Wi-Fi clients on the same infrastructure. -- Elimination of Complex RF Design: By coordinating all traffic on the network, Meru's WLAN System eliminates co-channel interference and removes complex RF planning and management tasks reducing costs and complexity.
"Azulstar's innovative approach to providing city-wide Wi-Fi voice and data service required a solution that only Meru could provide," explained Kamal Anand, vice president of marketing for Meru Networks. "Our WLAN System is the only solution that enables them to support all the current users of data services and all the future users of wireless VoIP on a single network infrastructure."
