NEC's IP Telephony System Implemented at Leading Luxury Hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo

22 February 2006

NEC Corporation (hereafter NEC) and NEC Nexsolutions, Ltd. today announced the installation of NEC's IP telephony system and broadband network at Tokyo's newest hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. The advanced IP telephony system is capable of servicing the hotel's 650 IP phones and 1,300 IP ports, including its 179 guestrooms and suites, marking the first full implementation of an IP telephony system by a hotel in Japan (note 1).

The IP telephony system, built around NEC's flagship UNIVERGE SV7000 (note 2), provides a broadband platform with advanced security features. The hotel leverages this platform to provide the most up-to-date IT environment for business travelers in the comfort of their rooms. In addition, it allows Mandarin Oriental to offer wireless and wired high speed Internet connections throughout the entire hotel as well as supporting Mandarin Oriental's IP-based High Definition (HD) Video on Demand (VOD) service the first HD VOD implementation in the hospitality industry in Japan. The broadband platform allows for the continuous provision of new multimedia services for guests.

"The implementation of NEC's IP telephony and broadband platform is part of Mandarin Oriental's ongoing endeavor to provide guest-centric technology combined with Mandarin Oriental's legendary level of service," says Geoff McClelland, vice president, Technology -- Hotel Development at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. "NEC provides a sophisticated and integrated environment which supports all of our guest and administrative functions including voice, data, video as well as unified messaging, property management and point of sale systems, rapid response and smart guest room initiatives."

Main features of the system installed at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo:

* Realization of high-quality service utilizing broadband platform-based

on NEC's UNIVERGE SV7000

The broadband platform was built with NEC's UNIVERGE SV7000, and

comprises of approximately 650 IP telephones including "ITR-4D" IP

phones for guest rooms and "IPterm85" IP phones for administration

offices, a highly reliable multi-layer switch, UNIVERGE IP8800/S302 and

a wireless LAN system. A high level of conversation quality is secured

by enhancing the priority of the voice service on the network.

Moreover, the broadband platform provides a wireless LAN environment,

in which Internet access is available from any point in the hotel,

including guest rooms and public areas. Also in the guest rooms, the

platform supports services such as high-speed wired Internet

connections and IP based High Definition (HD) Video-on-Demand (VOD).

* Network platform providing robust security and efficient operation

In addition to the broadband platform separating the networks for guest

service and administration by a firewall, it also logically separates

all kinds of media such as voice, data, wireless LAN/video transmission

using virtual LAN (VLAN (note 3)) technology. Furthermore, an extremely

safe security environment is enabled by the adoption of Isolate-VLAN

(note 4) technology, which strengthens the individual security of each

guest room. Network management software, WebSAM NetvisorPro, realizes

efficient operation management of the broadband platform.

"NEC's innovative broadband solution is just one of a broad portfolio of integrated IT/network solutions in the UNIVERGE range. We will strive to market our solutions worldwide building on the success of the implementation of our UNIVERGE solution in Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo," said Kazuo Tsuzuki, associate senior vice president of NEC Corporation.

NEC has been selected globally as one of the preferred vendors of telephony systems by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. The delivery of the IP telephony system at its Tokyo property is a result of NEC's past successful record and solid support structure over many years with Mandarin Oriental.
