New Royal Ottawa Hospital to Showcase Power of Wireless Telemedicine

1 July 2005

The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (ROHCG) will deliver the next step in high-quality, specialized mental health care with the addition of wireless telemedicine applications and services to its new Royal Ottawa Hospital currently under construction.

ROHCG plans to deploy a Mobility Solution from Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT], initially including wireless mesh technology, at the new mental health centre and research institute for use by more than 1,000 doctors, researchers and hospital staff to improve the efficiency and productivity of medical staff and enhance the quality of care delivered.

“We are building a centre of excellence that will meet our clients’ needs through leadership in care, education, research and advocacy,” said Bruce Swan, chief executive officer, Royal Ottawa Health Care Group. “Implementing a wireless solution from Nortel will give our doctors and staff more flexibility in the way they care for patients. Ultimately, new telemedicine services and tools will allow clinicians to not only increase productivity but also improve patient care by delivering critical information to the bedside.”

Designed to deliver user mobility and ultimately increase patient care, Nortel’s Mobility Solution for the new Royal Ottawa Hospital will give doctors, nurses and faculty increased flexibility and productivity by enabling real-time access to critical patient information anywhere within the hospital campus. Clinical teams will have the flexibility to use wireless-enabled laptops and other handheld computing devices to access the hospital’s internal network, patient records, Internet, e-mail, file sharing and other applications seamlessly and securely while moving throughout the hospital campus.

“The medical community in Ottawa has always been at the forefront of innovation, and today’s announcement underscores the Royal’s commitment to provide patients with exceptional, uncompromised healthcare that goes beyond the physical boundaries of a patient’s room or a hospital floor,” said Brian McFadden, chief research officer, Nortel. “Nortel’s mobility solutions bring a whole new dimension to telemedicine by enabling doctors and other healthcare professionals to have the freedom to access critical patient or medical information regardless of where they are on the entire hospital campus. This is an exciting initiative for the new Royal Ottawa Hospital, and Nortel is proud to be a part of its telemedicine solution.”

ameriTel Consulting, a leading-edge wireless consulting company responsible for the design and implementation of the Royal's information technology and telecom infrastructure, selected Nortel's wireless solution for this state-of-the-art facility. "We chose Nortel's wireless portfolio based on ROHCG's requirements for sustainable, long-term mobility and security solutions. We look forward to demonstrating how this technology can transform the healthcare business and enable delivery of a higher quality of care to patients,” said Marc Desparois, president, ameriTel Consulting.

The new Royal Ottawa Hospital will be the first in Canada to deploy a comprehensive wireless mesh network spanning the hospital facilities and grounds. The Royal Ottawa Hospital is the main referral centre for specialized psychiatric care in Eastern Ontario, and is an affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Ottawa. With the new hospital addition, ROH will have 188 beds, extensive outpatient and outreach services, ample natural lighting and a home-like setting that will provide a state-of-the art healing environment. A new research facility is also being built to house the adjoining University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research.

Nortel Mobility Solutions will also be used to manage new state-of-the-art security systems at the hospital, which are being provided by Johnson Controls, LP. Guy Lefebvre, Canadian Fire and Security Manager for Johnson Controls, said, "Johnson Controls, LP is proud to be a partner in this innovative, ground-breaking project. We are excited to be leveraging Nortel’s Mobility portfolio for our access control and CCTV integrated security solutions."

The Wireless Mesh Network solution provides a strong foundation for Nortel's ‘Office Anywhere’ mobility solution for the Virtual Enterprise beyond the normal confines of a wireless local area network (LAN). Nortel’s Mobility Solution, which includes wireless LAN, secure remote access and multimedia collaboration solutions, enables dispersed employees to collaborate as effectively as though they were in the same office, regardless of physical location. With these applications and solutions, Nortel makes it possible for workers to take their 'Office Anywhere' through reliable, secure mobile access to business applications wherever they are working.

Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network solution uses wireless links to connect access points in large open areas to provide secure, seamless access to wireless broadband services. This solution allows organizations to extend wireless LANs in areas where it is difficult or cost prohibitive to run cables.
