New Year's Eve to Bring Hampton Roads the Nation's Fastest Wireless Broadband Service From Verizon Wireless14 December 2005
Two award-winning broadband services from Verizon Wireless make their Hampton Roads debut this New Year's Eve. Verizon Wireless today announced the Dec. 31 Hampton Roads launch of BroadbandAccess, the nation's leading wireless broadband Internet access service, and V CAST, the first wireless broadband multimedia service in the country. Both services operate on the company's high-speed EV-DO (Evolution Data- Optimized) national wireless broadband network, which began commercial operation in October 2003 in Washington, D.C. and San Diego, and is now available in 171 major metropolitan markets and 69 major airports. Locally, the services will be available in Norfolk, Newport News, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Poquoson; the northern portions of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Suffolk; and, in portions of Williamsburg, York County and James City County. Verizon Wireless launched the services in Richmond in June 2005, and continues work to expand its high-speed network in the Commonwealth and throughout the nation. Verizon Wireless has invested more than $4 billion annually in the build- out and enhancement of its networks since the company's formation in 2000, and last year invested $5 billion, which includes build-out of the wireless broadband EV-DO network. BroadbandAccess BroadbandAccess service allows customers to connect wirelessly to the Internet via their laptop computers at broadband speeds averaging 400-700 kilobits per second (kbps), a convenient way to stay in touch and conduct business. The service enables a download in about 20 seconds of a 1 Megabyte email attachment (e.g., a small PowerPoint presentation or a large PDF file), or three 400 x 600 pixel digital photos. Verizon Wireless' EV-DO network technology is backward compatible -- a distinct advantage to the company's CDMA technology -- so that customers with an EV-DO device who travel outside a BroadbandAccess coverage area will switch seamlessly to Verizon Wireless' existing NationalAccess service, which provides a connection averaging 60 to 80 kbps. Business customers can use BroadbandAccess to establish a virtual private network (VPN) connection to their corporate local area network (LAN) or intranet, allowing them to work from any location within the BroadbandAccess coverage area as if they were in the office. The service is ideal for downloading files and business-critical information residing behind corporate firewalls and for accessing e-mail, intranets and the Internet. BroadbandAccess' EV-DO technology has its own data protection and authentication and is designed to work with a business' existing IT infrastructure and security solutions. Customers with any monthly voice plan can get unlimited BroadbandAccess for $59.99 monthly access with a two-year customer agreement. For non-voice customers, BroadbandAccess is available for $79.99 monthly access for unlimited use with a one- or two-year customer agreement. V CAST Verizon Wireless' V CAST service, launched in February 2005, enables consumers to stream and view on-demand video content including current news, weather, sports and entertainment programming. V CAST also lets users download and play cutting-edge 3D games, watch music videos and view a variety of short programs produced especially for the small screen. Programming available on V CAST includes news summaries from networks including NBC, CBS and CNN, entertainment from ABC, FOX and others, and highlights of programs like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Late Show with David Letterman. A full list of programming is available at http://www.getvcast.com. For $15.00 monthly access added to their Verizon Wireless calling plan, customers in Hampton Roads can get the V CAST VPak with unlimited access to more than 300 video clips updated regularly from leading news, sports, weather and entertainment content providers. The package also includes unlimited browsing on Verizon Wireless' Mobile Web 2.0(SM) news and information service. There are no airtime charges to download, stream or watch V CAST video. Premium content, including a special selection of music videos and sports clips, as well as 3D games and other Get It Now(R) applications, can be downloaded for an additional cost. V CAST and BroadbandAccess Accolades In September 2005, the CDMA Development Group recognized Verizon Wireless for "Best Service Innovation" for "its rapid U.S.-nationwide deployment and implementation of BroadbandAccess and V-CAST services" at the 2005 3G CDMA Industry Achievement Awards. In May 2005, CMP Media LLC's Network Computing named Verizon Wireless as the Best Business Data Service for BroadbandAccess in the publication's 2005 Well-Connected Awards, beating out business data services of two other major wireless carriers. BroadbandAccess PC Cards and V CAST Phones Verizon Wireless offers several PC Cards for BroadbandAccess use, including the UTStarcom Personal Communications PC 5740, the newest addition to the company's PC card line-up, for $99.99 with a two-year customer agreement. Customers can access V CAST on several hot new phones, including the Motorola RAZR V3c, the only RAZR to operate on the nation's fastest broadband wireless network. With an ultra-thin design, Bluetooth capabilities, and 1.3 megapixel digital camera, the Motorola RAZR V3c is $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a two-year customer agreement. V CAST is also available on two phones from LG, including the V, available for $199.99 after a $100 online instant rebate with a two-year customer agreement, and the LG VX8100, available for $99.99 after a $50 online discount with a two-year customer agreement.
