Newbury Networks Introduces Industry's First 'Presence' Platform for Location- Enabled WLAN Applications

21 March 2006

Newbury Networks Inc., the Location Systems Company(TM), today announced the introduction of a software application platform, the Newbury Presence Platform(TM). The Newbury Presence Platform speeds the development of a new breed of location-driven wireless LAN (WLAN) applications connecting mobile users and services. The platform is designed to integrate with standard wireless network infrastructure from leading vendors such as Cisco Systems, Symbol, Aruba and Nortel.

In a separate announcement today, Newbury introduced its Active Asset(TM) software application for real-time asset tracking over Wi-Fi which exploits the features of the Newbury Presence Platform. Further, all of Newbury's applications, including the award winning WiFi Watchdog(TM) and WiFi Workplace(TM) solutions are hosted on the Newbury Presence Platform.

The Newbury Presence Platform allows developers and integrators to quickly build rich location-based applications and integrate them with external systems for a complete business driven solution. It addresses critical challenges for building location-based applications. The Presence Platform works with multiple WLAN systems to translate each system's unique position data, such as x, y, z coordinates, into context rich locations that are meaningful to users. Objects such as laptops, phones, PDAs, people, assets and equipment are tracked in real-time and their activities and attributes are captured, logged, and reported. Objects and locations are combined to enable detailed policy definitions, event triggers, alerts, and rules that drive location contextual services. For example, Newbury's Active Asset application can track hospital equipment when it moves and trigger an alert when a device leaves its assigned area, preventing loss and speeding time of care.

"As the leading networking systems integrator for both Cisco Systems and Nortel in the Netherlands, we're pleased to be partnering with Newbury Networks," said Wim Coenen, Director Business Development, Vosko Networking BV. "The Presence Platform enables us to rapidly deploy location-based applications for key areas such as asset tracking, security and content delivery."

"The collaboration between Newbury and the leading networking infrastructure providers has helped us deliver a common platform integrating multiple location applications for a unified solution," said Michael Maggio, president and CEO, Newbury Networks, Inc. "This approach differentiates Newbury from other vendors who market point solutions such as asset tracking or security. The unique location and object properties of the Newbury Presence Platform are the result of our real-world expertise in deploying applications since 2001. The Newbury Presence Platform allows enterprises to leverage both the 'who' and the 'where' to deliver critical information and services to key personnel when they need it."

Based on Newbury's enterprise-validated and patented location technology, the Newbury Presence Platform provides the following capabilities and benefits:

* Location Services -- Newbury's Presence Platform offers the most

versatile and powerful location technology capabilities of any

"positioning" platform or Wi-Fi location appliance on the market today.

Solution providers can select the location method that best suits the

application being deployed. For example, highly accurate location

tracking with border level precision may be sufficient for Wi-Fi

security applications. However, for Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN)

applications, high accuracy with room-level precision and low latency

are critical for content provisioning and follow-me services.

* System Level Integration -- The Newbury Presence Platform is an open,

robust software platform that integrates with leading enterprise

network infrastructure including other location-based positioning

engines from Cisco Systems and Aruba.

* Graphical Dashboard -- Newbury's Presence Platform includes a graphical

console that provides real-time visibility into the activity and status

of all tracked objects such as people, equipment, and Wi-Fi devices.

Updated in real-time by the Newbury Presence Platform, the dashboard

identifies the location of each 802.11 device to a room on a floor.

The graphical dashboard can be used by any of the applications running

on top of the Platform to display mobile asset and management activity

and alerts on graphical floor plans.

* Location Application Toolkit -- Newbury's Presence Platform includes an

easy-to-use, graphical builder to define the locations, objects and

services for the target business application. Extensible alerts,

flexible reports, notification to external systems all provide out-of-

the-box components to assemble location driven applications. Web- and

Java-based APIs provide production level interfaces for full

application development.

Platform Availability

The Newbury Presence Platform will be available to all certified Newbury OEM and channel partners within 30 days.
