PT Access Networks Launches to Offer Choice and Flexibility for Wireless Operators

28 March 2006

Responding to the demand for more cost-efficient and reliable wireless site backhaul, PT Access Networks announced the immediate availability of PT Access First(TM), a broad suite of access infrastructure services for wireless operators. PT Access Networks, which includes the wireless products of the former Progress Telecom, is the first in the industry to offer wireless service providers the unique combination of microwave/fiber-based backhaul, tower attachments and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS).

Historically, wireless operators have relied on copper T1 connections from local exchange carriers (LECs) to backhaul traffic from the cell site to their wireless switches. Reliance on such legacy networks can often be costly, unreliable and limiting, particularly as wireless networks begin migrating to Internet Protocol (IP). PT Access Networks offers an innovative approach, incorporating microwave and fiber-based solutions to address quality of service, bandwidth, and the economics of their backhaul needs.

"We talk with wireless operators regularly who are frustrated with their current backhaul solutions. Today's launch of PT Access Networks and our PT Access First suite of services are in direct response to their needs for site infrastructure solutions and alternatives to traditional LEC backhaul," said Peter Neill, president and chief operating officer, PT Access Networks. "Our customer-focused approach of offering both microwave- and fiber-based backhaul solutions gives our customers more flexibility and bandwidth to accommodate their next-generation consumer wireless offerings."

Based on state-of-the-art, field-tested digital technology, PT Access First solutions can easily serve the varying needs of SMR, Cellular, and PCS operators along with new wireless entrants requiring IP or Ethernet based services. Offerings immediately available to wireless operators as part of PT Access First include:

-- Backhaul -- The uniquely integrated hybrid fiber/microwave (HFM)

backhaul architecture from PT Access Networks enables wireless

customers to select the backhaul solution that best fits their needs.

The flexibility offered by PT Access Networks can deliver broadband

backhaul services to a greater number of sites more economically than

copper-based facilities or microwave- or fiber-only options.

-- Attachments -- Leveraging electric utility transmission infrastructure,

PT Access Networks will continue to deliver the wireless siting

solutions customers have come to expect with Progress Telecom over the

last 10 years.

-- Distributed Antenna Systems -- DAS is an innovative network solution

that is expected to become a primary RF infrastructure tool for

wireless operators. DAS will enable wireless operators to provide a

high-capacity wireless underlay to meet their growing QoS, capacity,

and coverage needs, while driving down deployment time and overall

operating costs.

"For years, the largest wireless companies in the United States have depended on us for both fiber-based broadband transport services and tower attachments," said George Townsend vice president and general manager of the Wireless Infrastructure Division at PT Access Networks, and former general manager at Progress Telecom. "PT Access Networks is now well-positioned to provide a more complete, end-to-end access network solution to wireless customers, while delivering the same high service levels and reliability they have associated with Progress Telecom."

Founded in 2006 following the sale of Progress Telecom to Level 3 Communications, Inc., PT Access Networks is headquartered in St. Petersburg, Fla. For more information, please visit http://www.ptaccess.net.
