Radionet Delivers Wi-Fi Hotzone Network to Port of Las Palmas, Canary Islands25 January 2005
New network allows easy expansion and provides Port of Las Palmas the flexibility to meet continuously evolving business needs
Radionet Ltd, a leading supplier of Wireless Hotzone technology, announced that it has together with its systems integrator partner ITACA Canarias delivered a Wireless Hotzone network to the Port Authority of Las Palmas. The network connects companies operating in the Port of Las Palmas to the Port Authority’s customs and logistics systems with high-speed wireless links, and covers key areas of the port with a seamless Wi-Fi Hotzone. Building on experiences from several port networks in Northern Europe, the port of Las Palmas network marks Radionet’s entry into the Spanish market.
The Port of Las Palmas is one of the busiest ports in Spain and handles over 650,000 passengers and 17.7 million tons of cargo each year. The Port Authority of Las Palmas is actively modernizing the port’s infrastructure and taking advantage of the latest technology innovations, such as Radionet’s Wireless Hotzone technology.
“The new Wireless Hotzone network enhances communications and positions us to meet the demands of growth in the future. Open standards and Radionet’s technology provide us with the flexibility to quickly adapt to changing needs, and, in the future, the network can easily be expanded to cover additional areas in the port,” said Enrique Hernández, General Director of port, Port of Las Palmas.
The Port of Las Palmas network is one of the first Radionet’s Mobile Broadband networks in Spain. The network was designed and built by ITACA Canarias, and it is based on Radionet’s Wireless Hotzone technology. The network features high-speed 54 Mbit 802.11a Point-to-Multipoint Link technology for connecting companies in the port area with the Port Authority’s customs and logistics systems, and 11Mbit 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi technology for end-user access. The network is connected to the Internet through a direct high-speed satellite link.
“The Port of Las Palmas network is based on Radionet’s Wireless Hotzone solution, which is designed for high security, effortless management and demanding environmental conditions, such as moist and salty port environments. The network features Radionet’s MageIP technology, which enables handover between different IP subnets, provides users with seamless mobility and uninterrupted network access within the Hotzone’s coverage area. The network is based on common Wi-Fi standards, which allows the Port Authority of Las Palmas to extend the network easily in the future while taking advantage of the latest access devices,” said Markus Björkqvist, VP, Sales and Marketing, Radionet.
