Realeyes3D Puts Camera Phones to Work in Japan

11 October 2005

- Mobile Imaging Pioneer and Leading Carrier Field-Test Camera
Phone-Based Document Scanning for Mission Critical Enterprise Applications
Realeyes3D, the pioneer of handwritten messaging and an early leader in
embedded mobile imaging applications and wireless data services for camera
phone users, today announced that it has undertaken an extensive technology
evaluation and field trial of its Digitizer3(TM) ("Digitizer cubed") Mobile
Scanning service for enterprise applications with DoCoMo Technology, Inc.
DoCoMo Technology, the technology innovation arm of NTT DoCoMo, is currently
evaluating and field-testing Digitizer3, the first commercially available
mobile document scanning service, launched by Realeyes3D in March 2005.
Digitizer3 transforms high resolution camera phones into mobile scanners, fax
machines, and photocopiers. With Digitizer3, mobile camera phone users can
instantly scan and send a copy of any document to a fax machine or an email
account, in just a couple of clicks.
Early on, DoCoMo Technology identified the unique value of Digitizer3
Mobile Scanning and sought to validate the technology for robustness and its
potential to address the need for long-awaited mobile fax and document
scanning services and applications for mobile professionals, using camera
phones. Realeyes3D and DoCoMo Technology have built and started extensive
testing of an end-to-end mobile document scanning service using Docomo 3G
phones, with resolutions ranging from 1.3 to 3 mega pixels, and the NTT
DoCoMo 3G network. The multi-month trial is aimed at confirming the relevance
and impact of the Digitizer3 technology when used in mission-critical
applications. A world premiere, Digitizer3 enables a new breed of high-ROI
mobile applications that generate substantial, incremental data traffic and
revenue for wireless carriers. DoCoMo Technology is planning to present the
outcome of the trial in November 2005.
"We have been looking for this type of technology for some time, and are
constantly seeking new ways to create value for our subscribers and
enterprise clients, big and small. Digitizer3 is a unique cutting-edge
application and represents a great opportunity for wireless carriers to
create new data services and leverage the millions of camera phones in the
market," commented Masato Mori, Senior Manager, Corporate Strategy Planning
Department, DoCoMo Technology.
For millions of mobile camera phone users, Digitizer3 Mobile Scanning
brings a breakthrough in personal productivity. It transforms the camera
phone into a mobile scanner, fax machine and photocopier, and places it in
the pocket of mobile professionals. Just as email has been "mobilized" with
push email solutions in recent past, Digitizer3 transports the universal
business task of document reproduction and transfers it onto the mobile
network. For wireless carriers, Digitizer3 Mobile Scanning delivers new,
mission-critical data services by extending the mobile office offering for
professionals beyond email and SMS, with mobile fax, scan-to-email,
photocopying, and document management. Both professional users and consumers
can enjoy the flexibility and freedom of being untied to the office for
everyday tasks such as scanning, photocopying and faxing.
"Our work with DoCoMo Technology is proof that mobile imaging can be
brought beyond simple photography into the realm of high-value services for
camera phone users, either professional or consumers," commented Benoit
Bergeret, CEO, Realeyes3D. "As a pioneer in such applications, we are pleased
to be working with the market leader in Japan, the birthplace of the camera
phone, where users are actively seeking new ways to optimize personal
productivity with their mobile devices. We look forward to helping DoCoMo
Technology build one of the first truly useful, quick-ROI applications, based
on camera phones."
Based on patented image processing technologies developed over several
years by Realeyes3D, Digitizer3 overcomes the challenges of real-world
optical document acquisition, simply and quickly, by ensuring that the
resulting scanned image is on par with the quality of office based faxing or
scanning. It also provides a fully automated user experience, a key to
mass-market adoption of mobile applications, such as those that are being
developed and tested by DoCoMo Technology.
