Samsung Unveils Equipment to Enable the Global Commercialization of WiMAX; Expanded Product Portfolio Featured at Booth #3226

7 April 2006

At the annual CTIA Wireless 2006 trade show, Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung) unveiled today its IP-based Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution that will enable the global availability of converged telecommunications services via a WiMAX network. The latest product portfolio consists of two elements that support the IMS solution -- the Radio Access Station (RAS) and the Access Control Router (ACR).

The IMS network, which is the basis of Samsung's WiMAX platform, will deliver high-speed services like voice, video conferencing and instant messaging, to rural and suburban locations not accessible by current technology. The solution also will create broadband "hot zones" in more densely populated areas.

The suite of IMS products includes IMS servers (IMS-Serving, IMS-Proxy and IMS-Server), IMS-Media Gateway Controller, IMS Media Gateway and IMS Media Resource Function. The products, capable of serving small to large markets, offer high performance packet processing with end-to-end quality service and carrier-class capabilities like integrated billing.

The Standard RAS features a smart antenna with advanced radio frequency technology. Its high capacity and 802.16e air interface protocol provides broadband data rates of up to 30 Mbps per sector, while supporting three to six sectors. Built for large-scale deployments, the Standard RAS enables faster download times for end users in dense urban areas to the suburbs.

The Mini-RAS is a smaller version of the Standard RAS, capable of the same 20W power output but mountable on ceilings, walls or poles. Both RAS models deliver the network access, convenience and cost savings required by a WiMAX system.

Containing an IP-based radio access network architecture based on the IMS core network, the ACR enables efficient mobility management with a centralized control structure and maximized micro-mobility capability. The ACR also facilitates seamless wireless connectivity by minimizing the handover latency on Layer 2 over the air and minimizing bearer path switching delay on the network.

Samsung's suite of WiMAX-ready products usher in the age of converged services delivered from a single, IP-based network. Home, business, and vehicular applications include Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), video telephony, multimedia messaging and conferencing, location and telematic services, broadcast, and multimedia push and demand services.

The company is showcasing these products in booth #3226 at the CTIA show in Las Vegas, Wednesday, April 5 to Friday, April 7, with the "World's First Mobile WiMAX Deployment" demo.

"Samsung is using the valuable experience gained from supporting WiBRO in Korea to strengthen the ongoing development of WiMAX services for the global market," said Tom Jasny, vice president for Samsung's Wireless & Broadband Network Systems. "We hope to bring the success we've had in the first quarter of this year in Korea to the U.S. and beyond."
