Savi SmartStart(TM) RFID Solution Reduces Time and Cost to Deploy Real-Time Tracking of Supply Chain Assets

1 March 2006

Leveraging 16 years of global Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) leadership, Savi Technology today announced the general availability of the Savi SmartStart(TM) Solution for businesses seeking an ultra simple, quick, low-cost and low-risk way to implement RFID to validate long-term investment in this technology. Announced at the opening of RFID World 2006 (Booth #826), the Savi SmartStart Solution jumpstarts RFID operations with an affordable localized project using Savi's proven RFID hardware, software and services.

The Savi SmartStart Solution takes advantage of the industry's most successfully proven active RFID-based solutions, which have provided real-time visibility, management and optimization of more than 1.5 million assets as they move through global and local supply chains. Promising more streamlined operations, improved efficiency, and reduced asset inventory costs, the Savi SmartStart Solution can be quickly implemented to track assets and items at local sites. Savi SmartStart Solution provides:

-- Real-Time Visibility of Local Assets. Any RFID-tagged asset within a

local site can be located and monitored in real-time on pre-configured

facility or location maps through a web-based interface. In addition,

real-time alerts via the web, email and cell phone or pager will notify

managers of asset location information. Handhelds computers enable

users to commission tagged assets for mobile operations and to quickly

read inventory stocks.

-- RFID Network Management. Savi's SmartStart's RFID Network management

includes device configuration, monitoring and management. Readers can

be monitored to reduce reader network management costs and the required

labor and time to manage the local business rules associated with those

readers. Users set up real-time alerts so that network device problems

are identified immediately. SmartStart's RFID Network Management

reports include: Site Infrastructure Report, List of Devices Report,

SmartChain(R) Site Manager Downtime Report, Reader Uptime Report, and

Low Tag Battery Report.

-- Scalable RFID Foundation. Savi SmartStart is designed as a jumpstart

platform for a first RFID implementation. As RFID requirement grow,

Savi SmartStart can easily expand to a full enterprise solution by

adding additional applications and functions to the base platform.

-- SmartStart Asset and Inventory Reports. New and instant insights into

asset activity can be gained with key reports on Network Inventory,

Inventory by Asset, Asset Movement, Activity Audit, Inventory

Reconciliation, and User Activity.

"Savi Technology is among the most mature and established providers of complete active RFID-based solutions, and this jumpstart approach comes at an ideal time when businesses need to identify solid business cases for implementing RFID solutions, but don't want to invest in full-scale projects," said Mike Liard, RFID Program Director with Venture Development Corporation. "Most business executives recognize the potential benefits of RFID to their supply chain operations, and new offerings such as Savi SmartStart will help accelerate the discovery of RFID's value without the cost and complexity of full implementations."

"The Savi SmartStart Solution is a simplified approach based on our years of expertise in bringing new levels of business value to our customers, whether in a closed-loop location or open-loop, network supply chain," said Chris Stephenson, Savi's Senior Vice President of Marketing. "Supply chain decision-makers can no longer afford to take a 'wait-and see' attitude about RFID, and this solution is designed to help them make the business case of RFID's ROI for their particular operations."

Savi SmartStart is built on the same foundation as Savi's active RFID networked solutions to track shipments for government and commercial organizations around the world. As longer-term investments are validated, SmartStart implementations can be seamlessly upgraded with enterprise-class software for complete supply chain management and security solutions. By leveraging the SmartChain(R) Enterprise Platform, the SmartStart foundation can integrate real-time data transmitted from all types of Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) devices, including sensors, bar codes, EPC-compliant passive RFID, active RFID and GPS satellite location systems.
