Securing E-Passports With StrongHold Technology Amid Privacy Fears

6 September 2006

The U.S. State Department plans on issuing over 15 million electronic RFID enabled passports in 2007. These e-passports will use an RFID chip that is embedded in the passport to transmit your personal information to RFID readers at checkpoints. What does this mean for you the user of these new high tech e-passports? Your information is at risk.

RFID technology currently is in use in common everyday devices like credit cards, toll tags, food packaging and other consumer devices. Any technology that can transmit personal data needs to be secured.

Paraben Corporation has released a product designed to block RFID signals associated with these new e-passports. Paraben's Passport StrongHold(TM) Bags utilize the principles of a faraday cage to completely and securely block the RFID from transmitting while the passport is in the bag. The patent pending design is unique in securing anything placed in the bag from transmitting a signal where it can be read by prying scans. By completely enclosing the entire passport, risks from information skimmers are eliminated.

The combination of the folding design secured with Velcro along with the tri-woven nickel, copper, and silver material truly make this bag unique. The process of using the bag is simple. When the passport is in the bag, no signal will escape. When you go through a passport checkpoint, simply remove the passport and then place it in the bag again when finished. The passport bag can even be used for protection of RFID credit cards, being just large enough for a wallet.
