Sierra Wireless introduces next generation HSDPA embedded module

9 May 2006

Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW) today introduced the MC8775 PCI Express Mini Card embedded module, the first product in the company's lineup for next generation HSDPA networks and the sixth in the company's 3G embedded module product line. With tri-band HSDPA functionality for worldwide roaming on 3G networks, the MC8775 supports peak data rates of up to 3.6 Mbps(*), and is ready for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) testing and integration into notebook computers and other devices.

"Sierra Wireless is committed to providing our OEM customers with the best available wireless technology for integration as quickly as possible, to support their product development cycles and provide a time-to-market advantage," said Trent Punnett, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Development for Sierra Wireless. "The increased data speed and worldwide roaming capabilities of the MC8775 embedded module offer significant benefits that we believe OEMs will want to deliver to their customers, and allows them to ship a single platform worldwide."

The MC8775 PCI Express Mini Card embedded module offers connectivity to all three HSDPA/UMTS frequency bands (850, 1900, and 2100 MHz) and all four EDGE/GPRS bands (850, 900, 1900, and 2100 MHz) used worldwide, allowing for seamless global roaming on the best available network. The module also offers reduced signal interference and better data throughput through the use of advanced radio features. This will be especially beneficial to users in urban areas, which often have high levels of signal noise. For OEM customers who wish to add voice capabilities to their devices, a voice-enabled variant of the module, called the MC8775V, offers simultaneous voice and data transmission capability. Out of the box, the MC8775 supports peak theoretical data rates up to 3.6 Mbps on HSDPA networks(*), with the potential for future upgrades to provide support for peak data rates of up to 7.2 Mbps(*).
