SMC Announces New Wireless Broadband Router For Cable and DSL Broadband Sharing

21 February 2005

SMC® Networks, leading provider of networking solutions for the SMB/e and all the way home today announced the availability of the newest in its Barricade family of easy-to use networking products for the home and small office, the EZ Connect™ g Wireless Broadband Router (SMCWBR14-G).

This new broadband router offers 802.11g 54 Mbps wireless connectivity, four 10/100 ports for wired connections and a 5th 10/100 port for cable or DSL connection. Now available at an MSRP of just $69.99, the new EZ Connect g Wireless Broadband Router, offers secure broadband, file and peripheral sharing for as many as 253 simultaneous users.

“An inexpensive, high-utility device, the new SMCWBR14-G broadband router makes sharing and collaborating easy enough for any home or small office,” said Moon Kang, Product Manager for SMC Networks. “Share broadband, files and peripherals, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. UPnP support makes it easy to use it to access networked game consoles and PVRs; to view the family photo album on the television; to transmit downloaded video for viewing on the television; to listen to downloaded MP3 files on the stereo—the list goes on. This router has the bandwidth, speed, and signal strength to anchor the networked home.”

SMC’s EZ Connect g Wireless Cable/DSL Broadband Router (SMCWBR14-G) is compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g wireless standards, so can connect existing and newer equipment at home or in the office. It combines an 802.11g/b Wireless Access Point, a 4-port 10/100 Mbps dual-speed switch with Automatic MDI-MDIX ports, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall security, network management, parental controls and Virtual Private Network (VPN) passthrough support. NAT support and a built-in DHCP server mean that this router can provide simultaneous Internet access and automatic configuration to up to 253 PCs using a single IP address. And, Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP) support makes it easy to connect game consoles, PVRs, set-top boxes and other networkable household appliances.

Supporting transfer rates of up to 54Mbps in 802.11g mode—5 times the data rate and throughput of standard 802.11b WLAN products, it’s easy to use and secure, too. The SMCWBR14-G sets-up easily with its EZ 3-Click Installation Wizard. Its integrated Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall provides protection against hacker invasions, such as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, by analyzing individual data packets as they pass through the router. The 802.11g EZ Connect router supports 802.1x for authorization and authentication, and has a built-in Radius Server, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), disable SSID broadcast, MAC address filtering, and 64/128/152-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) in 802.11a mode and 64/128-bit WEP encryption. Network access can be further controlled with Website-blocking by URL or keyword.

Available now, the new SMCWBR14-G EZ Connect g Wireless Broadband Router carries an MSRP of just $69.99, as well as the benefits of 24/7 support and SMC’s limited lifetime warranty.
