Sprint Celebrates Earth Day with LEED(R) Certification24 April 2005
Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced it has reached a milestone in its effort to become a more environmentally friendly company. The company has been awarded the Leadership in Energy Efficiency Design (LEED) Certification for new construction by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
LEED is a green building rating system that was designed to guide and distinguish high-performance commercial and institutional projects, with a focus on office buildings.
By thinking globally and acting locally, Sprint is proactively developing, promoting and participating in initiatives aimed at enhancing quality of life by improving the environment.
"When we applied for LEED certification, we had to submit one particular building for consideration," said Faye Davis, vice president - Enterprise Property Services, Sprint. "We selected 6480 Sprint Parkway, on the Sprint World Headquarters Campus in Overland Park, Kan., because it is a typical campus building."
Energy Efficient, Environmentally Friendly "Sprint's Certification of their building demonstrates tremendous environmental leadership," said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO, President & Founding Chair, USGBC. "LEED Certified buildings are more energy-efficient, use less water and fewer resources, and promote the well-being of the occupants. Sprint's successful incorporation of sustainable design features into their new building proves their commitment to the health of their employees, the surrounding community and the planet."
"It was Sprint's intent when we designed the campus to be as environmentally friendly as possible," added Davis. "Sixty percent of our campus is dedicated to green space, we recycle all our irrigation water, and our use of wind power is well documented."
By using wind power on the campus, Sprint has prevented almost 2 million pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere in 2004. And, by emphasizing conservation, Sprint has reduced electric use on its campus by more than 300 million kilowatts annually.
