TCS Technology Successful at Open Mobile Alliance's Location Server TestFest20 July 2006
TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless data solutions, today announced it successfully demonstrated the viability of mobile call flows conducted with all handset manufacturers' phones that participated in the Open Mobile Alliance's (OMA's) testing event. The tests were conducted using TCS' Xypoint® Secure User Plane for Location (SUPL) during the recent OMA TestFest in Belfast, Ireland. OMA's five days of cross-vendor testing among leading telecom companies worldwide was an essential step to establish the interoperability and commercial feasibility of next-generation mobile network equipment and user communications devices based on Assisted Global Positioning Systems (A-GPS) and SUPL technologies. This testing with OMA participants marks the achievement of a major milestone in the advancement of location technologies in the commercial arena for Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks. A recent Canaccord Adams analyst report states, "We believe 2006 and 2007 will be key years for the launch of Location-based Service (LBS) by wireless carriers." Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology has already experienced the benefits of having A-GPS integrated into handset technology and has been making such technology available for precise location fixes for over five years. These capabilities have resulted in innovative services for public safety, child tracking, fleet tracking, locating points of interest and navigation. TCS has provided CDMA-based A-GPS precise location fixes for a number of mobile operators around the world and has shown how the use of this technology has saved lives and provided important services. TCS' successful performance at the OMA-sponsored TestFest represents an important positive opportunity for GSM and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) operators around the world. "At OMA TestFests, we bring industry players together to enable service interoperability across devices, geographies, service providers, operators and networks," commented Fred Harrison, Vice Chair of the OMA and Chair of the OMA Interoperability Program. "We were pleased to have TCS involved in our event in Belfast, where they successfully completed interoperability tests with other SUPL participants from across the globe." "As a leader in location technology, TCS has been eager to participate in these mobile location tests," said Drew Morin, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for TCS. "TCS supports industry cooperation in testing to bring innovative technologies to market. The company prides itself on its expertise in wireless location and looks forward to the deployment of its Xypoint SUPL Server and the latest advancements in location technology for markets worldwide." TCS' Xypoint SUPL Server provides a turnkey solution and reduces the price and complexity of installation into GSM and UMTS networks. This system operates on TCS' award-winning Xypoint Location Platform, which has been providing reliable location service to wireless operators for more than seven years. Additionally, the solution can be deployed either within the operator's network or provided as a service from one of TCS' TL-9000 certified hosting facilities. TCS will participate in OMA's next TestFest which is scheduled to be conducted in September in Dusseldorf, Germany, to further support the advancement of the SUPL standard, handset interoperability and Xypoint SUPL Server platform functionality.
