Texas Instruments New Software Library Meets Mobile WiMAX Requirements for Wireless Infrastructure Products

11 October 2006

Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI) expands the depth and distinction of its WiMAX infrastructure solutions with the announcement of its WiMAX Forum 802.16e Wave 1 Certification Library. TI's highly optimized software library incorporates all of the core signal processing and permutation functions required to build a Wave 1 compliant solution. In addition, TI has incorporated Wave 2 permutation functions to hasten the adoption of the advanced multi-antenna signal processing features such as MIMO and beamforming which are defined as part of the WiMAX Forum Wave 2 feature set. TI's software library is a key component of its 1 GHz, DSP- based wireless infrastructure solution supporting the evolution of the mobile WiMAX standard. For more information, please visit: http://www.ti.com/wimaxwi .

TI's carrier grade WiMAX software library follows an extensive development and testing process, making it easy to integrate into both OEM products and service provider networks. The rigorous testing and responsive customer support of this library drastically reduces internal development costs for equipment manufacturers. The targeted processor for this code is the TMS320TCI6482, TI's high performance digital signal processor (DSP), providing OEMs the power and flexibility to develop a customized platform specific to their system requirements. The ease of integration offered by TI's software library creates opportunities to collaborate with solutions providers and develop technology that reaches beyond basic WiMAX functionality, setting the stage for complete, end-to-end base band systems.

"We are collaborating with TI to develop an 802.16e demonstration system, fully integrated with the necessary hardware and software components, including Tata Elxsi MAC software, to assist OEMs with effortless integration of WiMAX-compliant solutions into their network infrastructure," said Nitin Pai, Tata Elxsi's head of marketing. "The flexibility features offered by TI's software library was tremendously advantageous from a business perspective, as several of our customers are realizing the importance of selecting technology that can already support certification requirements and infrastructure requirements for WiMAX and other emerging air interface standards."

The software library can be easily customized and upgraded to support added functionalities to meet future 802.16e certification requirements. By providing the Wave 2 permutation schemes in this first release of the library, the highly-optimized software enables customers to differentiate their wireless applications with enhanced features and components immediately.

With mobile WiMAX rapidly emerging on the broadband wireless front, the need for swift, seamless interoperability testing is becoming increasingly necessary. The five wave requirements established by the WiMAX Forum define a rigorous certification process, with interoperability testing labs demonstrating compliance among service and solutions providers and ultimately providing feature-rich, high-speed broadband wireless access via WiMAX. TI's WiMAX software development closely follows the Forum's certification requirements and is committed to providing software to meet the needs of WiMAX system designers. "Our mobile WiMAX software development is directly linked to the activity and requirements of the WiMAX Forum and 802.16e standard. We continue to monitor the standard and update our software according to any changes or modifications that may arise in the corrigendum," said Arnon Friedmann, TI's communications infrastructure software manager.

Friedmann continues, "The delivery of high-quality, carrier grade software is a critical component in our overall wireless strategy allowing our customers to focus on their own differentiating features since the basic signal processing functions are provided by TI. This is achieved by providing a flexible software library allowing our customers to easily integrate their unique components and intellectual property into the overall system."

TI will be attending WiMAX World on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 through Thursday, October 12, 2006 in booth number 525 to introduce its comprehensive WiMAX technology portfolio, and demonstrate how each of TI's solution components equip OEMs with the network infrastructure necessary to fulfill the requirements of emerging wireless standards.

TI's upgraded software library, with feature enhancements that support multiple waves of WiMAX compliance, is available now.
