Verizon Posts Record High Speed Growth and Sprint Launches Three New Mobile Chat Services29 January 2006
Wireless Communication industry news provided by Financial News USA (OTC: FNWU) Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), the largest U.S. telecommunications company, on Thursday posted record-breaking wireless subscriber and high speed Internet customer growth, boosting revenue by 5.8 percent in the fourth quarter. Earnings fell from a year ago, when it posted a big gain on asset sales, but revenue jumped to $19.3 billion. "It was a great quarter for them," Thomas Watts, analyst at SG Cowen, said. "They're doing a very good job of telling their story that even though they're losing access lines, they're gaining customer connections." U.S. telephone providers Verizon Communications and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) on Thursday posted strong fourth-quarter financial results, boosted by wireless and high-speed Internet growth that helped offset declines in their traditional local telephone business. Both regional operators and their smaller peer BellSouth Corp. are battling cable television rivals, which have added phone and Internet offerings to their service packages and are also eyeing the wireless industry. Stifel Nicolaus analyst Chris King said the results showed promising growth for Verizon and AT&T's key services. "They're betting the futures of the companies on broadband and wireless. Both of them are certainly growing those businesses," King said. AT&T's earnings for the quarter beat analyst estimates as did Verizon's revenue. BellSouth, which reported a day earlier, said earnings rose 34 percent and its revenue met expectations. Customers of Sprint (NYSE:S) now have three new ways to use their phones to meet, greet and chat with people across the street or across the globe. Recently, Sprint announced the availability of Jumbuck Island from Jumbuck Entertainment, The Lounges from AirG, and Webdate Mobile(TM) from Trilibis Mobile for Sprint PCS Vision(SM) and Sprint Power Vision(SM) subscribers. Each service features an exclusive element available only through Sprint. "As mobile chat services become more and more popular, customers are asking for more ways to use the services to stay connected and meet new people while on the go," said John Styers director of Data Services for Messaging and Imaging for Sprint. "These three new services from Jumbuck, AirG and Trilibis give Sprint customers unique ways to reach others locally or around the world, whether it's to find people with common interests or find a date. It's just one more way Sprint is bringing exclusive services to our customers." Diamond I, Inc.
