Wireless Valley intros advanced capacity and traffic planning capabilities, enables quality of service levels for Voice over Wi-Fi2 July 2005
Building on its decade of experience in wireless network design and management, Wireless Valley® Communications today announced inventive new capabilities for capacity and traffic planning. Available in its EnterprisePlanner™ and LANPlanner® wireless network design products, this new functionality enables businesses to tailor the design of wireless networks down to the user and application level. The products will ensure the capacity and coverage needed to handle the ever increasing demands being placed on wireless networks.
Wireless Valley pioneered the concept of deploying wireless networks based upon a predictive network design that considers the impact environmental factors have on wireless signals. With this announcement, the company is expanding the predictive design capabilities of its software to include the number of users and the types of applications they are using.
“Wireless Valley has established itself as the leading supplier of design and management software for companies making the transition to wireless networks that support VoIP and other business critical applications,” said Jim Welch, CEO of Wireless Valley. “Given the vital nature of these applications, it is not acceptable to experience dropped calls or delays in information transmission, which is exactly what will happen if the wireless network is not planned to support the proper amount of bandwidth and coverage. Only our software enables companies to consider all the factors impacting wireless network performance to create a highly customized, robust network.”
The ability to plan wireless networks to eliminate challenges presented by emerging high-bandwidth applications is critical to organizations looking to embrace the technology. The flaws in a poorly designed network will become painfully obvious as soon as Voice over WiFi (VoWi-Fi) or similar applications are introduced. Traditional site-survey techniques cannot measure anticipated network traffic, which severely limits their usefulness in the design process. Likewise, management systems, particularly self-healing technologies, can never be truly effective if the network has not been properly designed up front.
SpectraLink, the leader in workplace Wi-Fi telephony, uses Wireless Valley’s LANPlanner software to design wireless networks for customers using their NetLink Wireless Telephones. “To ensure the excellent voice quality our customers require, the wireless infrastructure must be engineered to provide adequate bandwidth and coverage to support call volume and seamless roaming,” said Wayne McAllister, senior director of SpectraLink Service. “Wireless Valley’s software has been invaluable in designing or upgrading customer networks to meet these requirements.”
Capacity and Traffic Planning Details
The new capabilities fit seamlessly into the repeatable and scalable award-winning process Wireless Valley has created for wireless network design. After importing the drawing of a facility and identifying the basic construction materials, obstructions and potential interference sources, the designer defines user regions – perhaps an area of offices, a conference room or training facility. The user then enters the estimated number of people in the area and the type of applications that will be used such as web browsing, email, file transfer, video or VoWi-Fi. Each user region can have multiple layers, for example, five people using email, six using VoWi-Fi and ten web browsing. The software considers all the factors – environment, users and applications – and suggests the number of access points, placement and channel and power settings, which will be needed to support the required bandwidth and coverage.
