WJ Communications Introduces High Linearity, Variable Gain Amplifier for Mobile Infrastructure Applications

19 January 2006

WJ Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: WJCI), a leading designer and supplier of RF solutions for the wireless infrastructure and RFID reader markets, today announced the VG025 variable gain amplifier (VGA), designed for various current and next generation wireless technologies, such as GPRS, GSM, CDMA and W-CDMA, for which high dynamic range and small size are required.

"We continue to work closely with our customers to create unique wireless system solutions that not only increase system performance, but also aggressively reduce system costs," said Haresh Patel, senior vice president of sales and marketing. "WJ's VG025 and other variable gain amplifiers in the series provide a cost-optimized architecture that enable OEMs to achieve high linearity over the full attenuation range of the attenuator, without compromising the system dynamic range at lower gain settings. By integrating a variable attenuator and one of WJ's proven, high linearity MESFET amplifiers into a single package, we are able to offer a VGA that is ideal for either RF or IF AGC and temperature compensation circuits, reducing circuit board area by up to 40% and eliminating approximately 25% of the required tuning elements compared to other conventional implementations."

VG025 High Linearity Variable Gain Amplifier

Product Overview

The VG025 is a high dynamic range variable gain amplifier (VGA) capable of achieving an analog attenuation range of up to 21 dB. The +21 dBm output compression point and +40 dBm output intercept point of the amplifier are maintained over the entire attenuation range while operating over the 50-2200 MHz range making it ideal for either IF or RF applications. The attenuation is controlled by a single 0 to +5V analog input requiring up to 28 mA for the full attenuation range. The VG025 operates from a +5V supply voltage with a typical bias current of 150 mA and is packaged in a 16-pin 4x4 mm QFN package that is lead-free/green/RoHS compliant.

Performance can be optimized for specific frequency ranges. At 240 MHz the VG025 exhibits a gain of 15.4 dB at zero attenuation and has an attenuator range of 20 dB. And at 800 MHz it is capable of providing 15 dB gain at zero attenuation with an attenuator range of 21 dB. In either case the IP3 is typically 40 dBm and P1dB greater than 21 dBm over the full attenuator range.

The VG025 is a multi-chip module utilizing WJ Communications' proven, high reliability GaAs MESFET process for the amplifier and PIN diode technology for the attenuator. Capable of operating over the -40 to +85°C temperature range, the VG025 achieves an MTTF greater than 1000 years at a mounting temperature of +85°C. All devices are 100% RF and DC tested and packaged on tape and reel for automated surface-mount assembly. The lead-free/green/RoHS-compliant package is suitable for either standard tin-lead or higher temperature lead-free reflow profiles. The VG025 also has an ESD rating of Class 1B (HBM per JEDEC Standard JESD22-A114) and a Level 2 MSL rating at +260 C per JEDEC Standard J-STD-020.
