Xirrus Announces Bonded Multi-Radio Mesh Backhaul and Enhanced Security for Its Wireless LAN Array

4 May 2006

Xirrus, Inc., the provider of the most powerful Wi-Fi solutions for enterprise and campus environments and winner of 'Best Startup' at Networld+Interop 2005, announced the industry's highest capacity multi-radio, multi-backhaul mesh functionality for its Wireless LAN Array family. Xirrus' Wireless LAN Array can create up to four independent 162Mbps wireless backhaul links by bonding three of its Integrated Access Points together for each link. This functionality will be available as part of Software Release 2.0 scheduled to be released on May 30, 2006 and will be available to all existing Xirrus customers.

Bonded Multi-radio Mesh

The first of its kind, the Wireless LAN Array with its bonded multi-radio, multi-backhaul functionality, further underscores the power and flexibility of Xirrus' architecture by eliminating the need to run cabled uplink connections in areas where it may be impractical or cost-prohibitive to run Ethernet cable. All security and WLAN policies are enforced across the backhaul links and radio bonding provides load balancing and fail-over capabilities allowing for a uniform and fault-tolerant deployment across an entire enterprise campus.

"Xirrus' latest enhancements to the Wireless LAN Array provides our customers and OEM partners with the ability to deliver the needed capacity for converged voice and data networks in a variety of locations," said Dirk Gates, CEO at Xirrus. "We are committed to offering the most robust and flexible Wireless LAN solutions enabling additional deployment options such as wirelessly connecting an outlying building to the campus network or extending Wi-Fi connectivity outside a facility using the same equipment."

Current solutions on the market today are limited to one Wi-Fi radio to form a backhaul or they time share servicing clients with providing the backhaul. Regardless of the methodology chosen, competitive solutions remain limited to one radio interface, which provides a 54Mbps maximum backhaul connection ultimately limiting the network's capacity and degrading its performance.

Enhanced Security

Included in Software Release 2.0 will be increased security functionality delivering best in class Intrusion Detection and Prevention features augmented by Xirrus' partnership with Network Chemistry. The Wireless LAN Array's new Filtering and Firewall functionality and time of day access control can be locally, or centrally managed through Xirrus' Management System. This robust set of security features provides IT administrators with the most powerful and secure Wi-Fi network available.

About Xirrus

Xirrus, the provider of the most powerful Wi-Fi solution for enterprise and campus environments, introduced the next-generation in Wi-Fi architecture last spring 2005, winning 'Best Startup' at Networld+Interop 2005. Led by Dirk Gates, former chairman and CEO of Xircom (acquired by Intel), Xirrus developed the Wireless LAN Array to reduce the cost and complexity of large scale Wi-Fi deployments. Its revolutionary design combines a complete wireless LAN switch with up to 16 integrated access points and a high-gain, multi-sector antenna system to maximize Wi-Fi bandwidth and coverage while deploying fewer devices. Xirrus sells and supports its products and services through an international network of value added resellers and systems integrators. Xirrus is headquartered in Westlake Village, California.
