Xtra To Launch Faster Broadband And Lower Prices

13February 2006

Broadband is about to get faster forresidential customers -- and a lot cheaper for businesscustomers.

Telecom s ISP Xtra is to launch new speeds andpricing on broadband services for both business andresidential customers.

All existing residential customerswill be automatically upgraded to faster plans at nocost.

The new plan line-up includes download speeds of upto 3.5 Megabits per second (Mbps) and three new servicesthat offer an increased upload speed of 512 Kilobits persecond (Kbps).

Existing residential plans will have theirdownload speeds increased to maximum possible speeds ofeither 2 or 3.5 Mbps. Xtra will be progressively upgradingall current customers to the faster specifications for nochange of price - and some plans will move to a lowerprice.

Telecom s GM Wired Division Matt Crockett said thenew plans would be launched in early April.

"Bothresidential and business customers will find the plansprovide a great range of affordable broadband choicesdesigned to cover the varying needs of internetusers."

"The three new Xtra Pro plans in particular willbe very attractive to small businesses and customers at homewho require higher speeds in both directions as well aslarger data amounts each month," Mr Crockett said.

A newentry level plan will also be introduced, and priced from$29.95 it will provide 'a dollar a day broadband for peoplewho want a basic broadband service.

"We want to attractnew-to-broadband and new-to-internet customers -- and thisnew Xtra Basic plan will help do that," Mr Crockettsaid.

The simplified broadband line-up will offer the sameprices for both business and residential customers. Thiswill mean a big price drop for business customers, andfollows the December determination from the CommerceCommission on the unbundled Bitstream Service (UBS) and thesubsequent commercial agreement between Telecom andTelstraClear.

The new services will be available tocustomers from early April with existing customers receivingthe upgraded speeds progressively from that month on.

Thenew speeds will be available to other ISPs on a wholesalebasis on the same day.
